This lichen is growing on sandstone. From the morphology it looks like an Aspicilia, but I am stuck. In sectioning the black, what looks like apothecia, all I find are parenchyma type cells below the upper dark surface cells.
Sterile Aspicilia looks like a reasonable guess. There are a number of species (and genera) where the areoles can have pale edges or lines and make them look like apothecia.

It is very unlikely that TLC would help in this case.
