Sterile Aspicilia?

This lichen is growing on sandstone.  From the morphology it looks like an Aspicilia, but I am stuck.  In sectioning the black, what looks like apothecia, all I find are parenchyma type cells below the upper dark surface cells.

Sterile Aspicilia looks like a reasonable guess. There are a number of species (and genera) where the areoles can have pale edges or lines and make them look like apothecia.

Thank you Bruce for your reply.  I assume that this is far as I can go, or could TLC help?

It is very unlikely that TLC would help in this case.
