I read this book, and while I didn’t find it bland, I didn’t find a lot of joy in there. My guess is that the title is a homage to the resilience, patience, hardiness, and resourcefulness that Venn perceives in lichens, qualities he obviously admired since he venerates them in many poems. The sole poem dedicated to lichens has the line;”Together,[Fungi and Algae] they got the hardest job in the world-eating rocks, making dirt.”
