Posting some photos of a Physcia aipolia which is particularly rhizonate in comparison to other individuals I see in western WA. It was on ocean-spray growing between grassy fields in Covington.
Jason Hollinger has photos of very rhizonate P. aipolia in Wisconsin - http://www.waysofenlichenment.net/lichens/Physcia%20aipolia
I see that quite often. Perhaps it has to do with moisture at a site?
Also, apparently, our western P. aipolia is P. alnophila. P. aipolia is the eastern version.
