    Hi,

In the photo gallery, there are some pictures marked LABE-417. I first though his lichen was Allantoparmelia, however it is K- KC- C-. The lobes are 0.3-0.4 mm wide, with black squarrose rhizines. The apothecia are lecanorine, 0.5-1mm in size. Spores are dark, 17.92x10.24 in size with 1 thin septum and 2 oil drops (also pictured). It was growing on moss and lichen over rock east of the Cascades.

Any ideas of the genus of this lichen?

If the rhizines are indeed squarrose, then it should be a Physconia, and would be P. muscigena. But the color looks like a Phaeophyscia.

I though of Physcia types after I posted this. I could be it's "sunburn" that is giving it that dark color. I will do some more work in that direction. Thanks Daph!

Hi Steve - if you can post some pictures of the underside, I'd be interested in this as well. As Daphne said, squarrose rhizines suggest Physconia but the apothecia of Physconia muscigena tend to have a flattened exciple and flattened to slightly concave lobes and your specimen is so clasping - it's a lovely specimen, it'll be nice to know what it ends up as.

    Cheers,

It turns out they are not squarrose rhizines. After further study I have decided it is Phaeophyscia decolor.

    Thanks all,

    Steve
