Help...Lichen Identification for Bitterroot Valley

    Hey Folks,

I'm good at using my camera, not so good at chemical tests. I believe I have a basic understanding of lichen found locally in western Montana. So, I encountered a lichen (low elevation in Ponderosa Pine understory) growing on a boulder on Bitterroot National Forest property yesterday. It doesn't appear to be crustose, but referencing McCune and Geiser did not find a visual clue. Can you tell me what genus or species it might be from the linked photo? Many thanks, Bob

Bob, is this lichen wet or dry?

Looks like algae covered slime mold or fungi based on uneven green along the edge. Recommend returning to site this summer and look for Apothecia.

Good puzzle. Clicking on the photo to expand it I think I see a sprinkling of small black fruits, which, when sectioned, will help to nail this down. Also, it would be good to know color of the thallus when dry. The upper right where it is thinner suggest that this is a crustose lichen developing isidia-like projections. There are a number of genera that have species that do this.
