I was wondering about the variety of this Thelenella muscorum. I have found it hard to determine the spore number, it just looks muriform and solid. It is tough to get thin sections of the perithecia. The thallus is very green, was dark green when wet and looks like var. muscorum in the photo, but not sure if both varieties look like that. Photos are the in gallery. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Congrats, Thelenella is hard to find. I can't tell the variety from the photos, but you should be able to get it from the spore size and number. I suggest applying a little more pressure to spread the contents of the perithecium a little more. Focusing up and down will help you get a good spore count too.

Thanks Bruce! I will give it another go. Does the thallus for both varieties look the same?

As I recall, there is not much consistency in the thallus appearance. Often it is weakly developed and influenced by lichens it is growing on. So I wouldn't use that as the basis for naming.
