Another Funny Crust from the Elwha Rivershed Area

    Hi everyone,

While we were out in the sticks and vigorously looking at all of the lichens in the area, I found this strange looking crustose lichen. Initially, it peaked my interest because the thallus seemed so red! The pictures do not give it justice, but I was curious on if anyone had any idea what it could be?

Or maybe it isn't even a lichen... Who knows! Nature can be strange like that. Like how there is a new species of spider that mimics Cordyceps fungi!

I will be dissecting it soon to look at spores and such, so I will give updates when I have them. This crust was growing on an older Douglas-fir.

Based on the irregular outline of the apothecia and pinkish thallus, I would guess an Arthonia species. You should be able to confirm with the spores, which often have interesting shape and septation.
