And lastly, these are from my lichen-dyeing project. I used litter fall lichen from a nearby park where they collect the fallen branches and take them away to be chipped. I swooped in to collect the lichen before they made it to the chipper.
The dark purple color is made form Evernia prunastri. The pink is also E. prunastri but with an acidic dye bath. The method: take a bunch of lichen and let it sit in ammonia for several months, it will slowly turn a deep purple over time. Then use that "dye liquor" to make a bath for your fabric (animal fibers are best). The first four photos are of this method.
The brown is from Usnea spp which took much longer to collect!) and is made simply by boiling the fiber and lichen in water. The last two photos are the Usnea, as well as the brown yarn in photo 6.
Unlike other natural dyes, no mordant is required, which is so cool!
