I find it really interesting to watch species (in general) across the larger landscape and see changes in morphology. This sort of fat, stunted thallus is typical of poor air quality but also of dry areas, so maybe in NM you'd see something like this in clean air. Usneas show similar changes - in the east part of WA and OR they are short and dense, while here in Eugene they are much longer and less dense.
