While looking at the upper and lower cortex I saw these black structures that resemble perithecia. I thought that these might be apothecia that are still developing. I have not found any spores in these structures yet, but I also have only prepared 1 slide for each variety.  These photos where taken with a polarized light microscope.  Any thoughts or ideas for next steps would be appreciated!
