    Hello Everyone,

I am not certain about the ident. of this species (Image link below). I suspect it is Cetraria merrillii. Any thoughts?

The thallus is 2.5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide.

The largest apothecia is 2 mm.

    Photobiont is green algae.

There are smaller branching lobes mostly at the margin of the thallus but not limited to the margin.

The thallus is black when dry and dark green (olive) when wet.

The thallus and lobes are also flat.

This specimen was collected near Cave Junction, Or.

    Associate Species:

    Letharia columbiana

    Nobobryoria abbreviata

    Nobobryoria oregoana ??

    Vulpicida canadensis

The first 15 images in the album is of the thallus dry. The images after are the thallus wet. The final three images are of Cetraria californica for comparison and contrast.

Is there agreement that this is Cetraria merrillii?

Here is the link to the album

    Hi Keith,

Yup I'd say your ID was correct, although it is a pretty unusual form. The photo in McCune & Geiser is much more typical!  The associated spp are exactly what I'd expect.

    Hi Kieth,

I agree with Daphne. The photo looks like the lichen, to me, is either stressed or possibly has a parasite.

Thank you Daphne and Steve. Alan Fryday sent me a link to a photo collection of C. merrillii by Sharnoff. In that collection, he has a couple images of specimen which he describes as "broad-lobed morph."

Here is the link Alan shared:

Here is a link to another image of C. merrillii I captured at eight dollar mountain in 2013. While it has broad flat lobes, they are not as dominate.
