2015 Certification -- Macrolichens west of the Cascade Crest
H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest
9-11 October, 2015

For more general information on the certification program and format, please see the Certification pages on the NWL website.

The exam is offered every two years, and the location is changed each year, so this will be a great opportunity to be certified in Oregon. The next exam will be held in 2015, and will probably be in Washington.

THIS YEAR: You can choose to attend the certification as a training, instead of an exam with certification. You will still collect on the plot but after collection, you will work through your identifications with help from Amanda Hardman and Daphne Stone, both lichenologists. This gives you a chance to learn how to work on difficult genera. Relevant literature will be shared with these trainees.

HOUSING: We will stay in apartments and cook our own meals. You will need to bring food and bedding.

COST:  $165 per person with lodging, $115 per person without lodging. Note; same cost and registration whether you are doing the training or the certification.

WHY? Lichen Certification is a valuable addition to your resume, agency botanists and private contracting companies view it as a plus when considering who gets federal contracts and internal jobs.

We will have the apartments for two nights (9-10 Oct and the classroom for 2 days (10-11 Oct). Apartments have 5 double rooms. Cost is $50 for both nights per person - this is double occupancy of room with 2 single beds. You may request roommate. Each apartment has a kitchen with 2 refrigerators, a stove, a microwave, at least 1 coffeepot and dishes, pots and pans. Salt will be provided in the kitchens but you will need to bring all other food items.

BEDDING: you must bring your own pillow, blankets, towels, pillowcases and sheets. If you prefer, you can rent them from the facility for $20 for the weekend. We will be responsible for leaving the apartments in pristine condition. If you prefer to camp there are campsites nearby.

Also bring:

  • books and references
  • extension cord
  • dissecting scope
  • lamp for your scope
  • tools and chemicals (DS will have a set of chemicals but if you have our own, bring them)
  • collection equipment
  • paper for clean packets (can be recycled 1 side)
  • snacks and drinks for the identification day!

Alcohol is ok except in admin bldg and shop.
